How to Talk to Your Lasik Doctor

Doctor/patient communication has been a problem for decades. Between overbooking appointments and insurance paperwork, what should be a time resolving your problems can feel more like convener belt medicine. Here are a few tips.

Know what you’re going to ask: Have a short list of questions prepared for the doctor before you go to the office. The doctor can’t answer fifty questions, but four or five may be doable, especially if they are all related. If you think you’ll need more time than normal, mention that to the receptionist making the appointments. If it’s possible, more time may be set aside for that visit lasik surgery.

Make sure the most important issue is mentioned first, and you may even want to show the doctor the list of questions. It will make it easier for him or her to answer them if the topics are known.

Translating DoctorSpeak: If you don’t understand the instructions, there isn’t much use in getting them. If the doctor uses terms you don’t understand, either repeat what you think he or she said, or ask to have the instructions phrased differently. Your doctor isn’t doing it purposely. Some offices have electronic records. Ask if yours does and request a printout of all instructions, prescriptions and other important information.

Dismissing your Concerns: It’s very annoying to see your doctor about a problem that worries you and have the doc go, "ah, that’s not a big deal." You may need to explain why it’s a big deal to you.

As an example, let’s say there is a family history of heart disease. You’ve had a close relative have heart problems at the age you are now and you want to head it off at the pass. The doctor may listen to your heart, look at your blood pressure readings and feel that you’re fine. That’s not always reassuring.

If there are general tests that will show whether or not you have a problem that is dormant now but potentially disastrous, ask for them. In this instance, an EKG can be done in the office, which will give the doctor more information about the state of your heart. It probably is ok, but having the added test will give you peace of mind.

Contacting the doc between visits isn’t easy: Most doctors try to contact their patients either in the lunch break or at the end of the work day. Some don’t, and that can present a problem. There is a solution that could help.

Most doctor’s offices are now heavily computerized. Find out of the facility has e-mail that is checked on a regular basis, or perhaps a social networking site. Twitter is often used in this way. In fact, the doctors use it to put important health bulletins up for the whole patient base to use.

What about Alternative Medicine: Doctors are beginning to work with herbalists and other practitioners for the benefit of their patients. However, there are a lot of things they may not know about herbal remedies. Here are a list of things that could help you and your doctor find alternative remedies for some problems.

1) Have the information about the herbs or supplement with you so the doctor can review it. If possible, have a list of constituents in the herb, side effects and interactions. The more information the doctor has, the better the advice he or she can give.

2) If you’ve consulted a qualified practitioner, bring the information provided by the practitioner for your doctor’s review. This includes aromatherapy, herbal remedies and other practitioners.

3) Listen to the advice your doctor gives on the topic. There are two reasons for this, one for you and one for the promotion of complementary care. Your doctor has had training which may show more interactions, side effects and precautions. If he or she says not to use it, ask why. If it’s because he or she doesn’t know enough about it, get a second opinion from someone who does. Doctors don’t like to be ignored, and refusing to listen can make the doctor biased against anyone who wants to use alternative remedies.

Eye Surgery - Correcting Astigmatism With Lasers

LASIK Eye Surgery - Correcting Astigmatism With Lasers

Of all the wonders modern medicine has given us, perhaps none are quite as dramatic as that of LASIK eye surgery. In the past, eye problems were simply solved by glasses or other optical techniques. However, the procedure is now available, and has become one of the most popular elective surgeries in the country. To correct astigmatism, the eye doctor will use the laser to make an incision in the cornea, using pulsating light to correct its shape. In time (the frame being somewhere between instantly and a few months), the patient will have completely restored vision.
The Procedure
While there are alternatives available for patients who want to correct astigmatism, none are permanent and few are recommended above LASIK eye surgery. The surgery itself involves numbing the eye so there is no pain to the patient while the procedure is in progress. While it may not be the most comfortable you've ever been, the benefits are well worth the trouble. There may be some degree of pain and irritation after the procedure, but this can be easily handled with medication. The procedure itself is typically over in less than ten minutes.
PRK
For some patients, there is a similar procedure as LASIK eye surgery that is more appropriate for their circumstances. PRK, or photorefractive keratectomy, uses lasers as well to correct astigmatism but it works by reshaping the surface of the cornea rather than the underside. Both are equally effective, though patients who undergo PRK will have a longer recovery time ahead of them. It may be three months or more before you can enjoy the full benefits of your corrected vision. The cost of the procedures is roughly the same. In most instances, the choice between procedures will be made on the surgeon's end, rather than the patient.
Improved Vision
It's difficult to get a sense of how the aftermath of LASIK eye surgery will be just by reading reviews and journals online. It can be tricky even after talking to your doctor. Every individual's path is slightly different. Some will sit up after the procedure and will instantly notice that their eyesight is perfect. For others, it could take several months for the full effects to manifest. It's easy to get discouraged during this time, but don't. If you follow instructions and keep your doctor informed of any symptoms you may be having, you will eventually have the improved eyesight you wanted and the wait will be just a distant memory.

The Internet offers an excellent source for finding a LASIK surgeon in any specified area of New York. There are sites that provide detailed information on the procedure and the risks and benefits of laser eye surgery. However, there are some limitations. Some ads provide a detailed explanation of the broad features of their packages and offerings, while some offer discounted prices without giving necessary details. It is suggested that you have a consultation with the doctor before scheduling surgery.
