How to Talk to Your Lasik Doctor

Doctor/patient communication has been a problem for decades. Between overbooking appointments and insurance paperwork, what should be a time resolving your problems can feel more like convener belt medicine. Here are a few tips.

Know what you’re going to ask: Have a short list of questions prepared for the doctor before you go to the office. The doctor can’t answer fifty questions, but four or five may be doable, especially if they are all related. If you think you’ll need more time than normal, mention that to the receptionist making the appointments. If it’s possible, more time may be set aside for that visit lasik surgery.

Make sure the most important issue is mentioned first, and you may even want to show the doctor the list of questions. It will make it easier for him or her to answer them if the topics are known.

Translating DoctorSpeak: If you don’t understand the instructions, there isn’t much use in getting them. If the doctor uses terms you don’t understand, either repeat what you think he or she said, or ask to have the instructions phrased differently. Your doctor isn’t doing it purposely. Some offices have electronic records. Ask if yours does and request a printout of all instructions, prescriptions and other important information.

Dismissing your Concerns: It’s very annoying to see your doctor about a problem that worries you and have the doc go, "ah, that’s not a big deal." You may need to explain why it’s a big deal to you.

As an example, let’s say there is a family history of heart disease. You’ve had a close relative have heart problems at the age you are now and you want to head it off at the pass. The doctor may listen to your heart, look at your blood pressure readings and feel that you’re fine. That’s not always reassuring.

If there are general tests that will show whether or not you have a problem that is dormant now but potentially disastrous, ask for them. In this instance, an EKG can be done in the office, which will give the doctor more information about the state of your heart. It probably is ok, but having the added test will give you peace of mind.

Contacting the doc between visits isn’t easy: Most doctors try to contact their patients either in the lunch break or at the end of the work day. Some don’t, and that can present a problem. There is a solution that could help.

Most doctor’s offices are now heavily computerized. Find out of the facility has e-mail that is checked on a regular basis, or perhaps a social networking site. Twitter is often used in this way. In fact, the doctors use it to put important health bulletins up for the whole patient base to use.

What about Alternative Medicine: Doctors are beginning to work with herbalists and other practitioners for the benefit of their patients. However, there are a lot of things they may not know about herbal remedies. Here are a list of things that could help you and your doctor find alternative remedies for some problems.

1) Have the information about the herbs or supplement with you so the doctor can review it. If possible, have a list of constituents in the herb, side effects and interactions. The more information the doctor has, the better the advice he or she can give.

2) If you’ve consulted a qualified practitioner, bring the information provided by the practitioner for your doctor’s review. This includes aromatherapy, herbal remedies and other practitioners.

3) Listen to the advice your doctor gives on the topic. There are two reasons for this, one for you and one for the promotion of complementary care. Your doctor has had training which may show more interactions, side effects and precautions. If he or she says not to use it, ask why. If it’s because he or she doesn’t know enough about it, get a second opinion from someone who does. Doctors don’t like to be ignored, and refusing to listen can make the doctor biased against anyone who wants to use alternative remedies.

New York City LASIK Surgery

The city is also known for its advancements in the field of laser eye surgery. There are people who have hassles of putting contact lenses or glasses on a daily basis. They can benefit from LASIK surgery. The surgery can free people from the burden of contacts and glasses. It is basically a method of permanently changing the shape of cornea, the clear covering of the front of the eye. LASIK eye surgery is meant for people who are nearsighted or farsighted and have astigmatism.
New York City is known for it best eye specialists or surgeons who perform LASIK eye surgery. People who wear glasses or contact lenses may consult with them to verify whether they require a laser eye surgery. They may also refer to a list of available surgeons of New York to select surgeons on the basis of their popularity and experience.
The Internet offers an excellent source for finding a LASIK surgeon in any specified area of New York. There are sites that provide detailed information on the procedure and the risks and benefits of laser eye surgery. However, there are some limitations. Some ads provide a detailed explanation of the broad features of their packages and offerings, while some offer discounted prices without giving necessary details. Hence, an ad should not be the only criteria for choosing a good LASIK surgeon. People can contact the advertisers for further details that help them find well known or experienced surgeons. It is suggested that you have a consultation with the doctor before scheduling surgery.
LASIK eye surgery is reasonably less complicated than other kinds of surgery. However, if carried out in an irresponsible fashion, it may cause an irreparable damage to the patient. In New York City, it is necessary to choose the best services or surgeons through reliable sources.

New Lasik Surgery Techniques

New Lasik Surgery Techniques

New lasik surgery is so much better than in the past and promises a greater range of correction options, better vision after the surgery and less complications and risks. In the long run this means that more people can get rid of their contact lenses and glasses and will be able to experience the benefits of laser vision correction.
The current lasik procedures can correct problems of nearsightedness, far sightedness and astigmatisms, but have not been able to address problems with the thickness and shape of the cornea or severe vision problems and problems with night vision due to risky complications. The side effects of the current lasik procedures include painful dry eyes, halo's and painful bursts of light and blurry vision.
New lasik procedures will allow an eye surgeon to scan the eye to determine the thickness and shape of the cornea more accurately prior to ever actually firing a laser. This will give laser eye surgeons a much better initial evaluation of the problem that needs to be corrected, will help them determine better treatment options and will help to avoid unnecessary complications related to lasik surgey.
Clinical trials of the new lasik surgery procedures have shown patients returning to near perfect levels of vision within one month of having the eye surgery. They were able to see more clearly and in more detail much sooner after their lasik surgery was completed. In the past lasik patients would have to wait up to 6 months for their vision to be completely restored to normal. This is a huge leap in recovery time and is a great benefit to those people contemplating lasik surgery.
With new lasik procedures the eye surgeon begins by taking a 'picture' of the patients cornea with lasik imaging software. This is then run through recognition software to make a map of the persons eye, showing the thickness and shape of the eye in great detail. These 'eye maps' allow lasik surgeons to make much more precise adjustments and also to plan in advance for possible complications from lasik surgery.
With the new lasik surgery techniques the eye surgeon can keep the natural shape of the cornea, remove less tissue and can even correct night vision problems. New lasik techniques also leave the patient more comfortable since the laser bursts are much shorter, typically just 20 seconds, compared with the 60 second bursts that are needed now. Less damaging, less painful and faster recovery are all benefits of new lasik surgery techniques.
